Separate a preview from a payment document
A preview helps you inspect ordinary fields such as the payee, date, written amount, and memo. It is not automatically a usable check. The CheckQuill web preview and its PDF are marked SAMPLE — NOT NEGOTIABLE, contain no bank account information, and cannot be deposited. You can use them for practice and proofreading. For an actual payment, use materials and a process your bank accepts for your own account. A polished PDF, a print button, or an app listing does not by itself establish that a bank will process the result.
Ask the bank before choosing supplies
Contact your bank and describe the printing workflow you want to use. Ask what check stock it accepts, whether you should use preprinted account information, what layout constraints apply, and whether any machine-readable processing or MICR requirements affect your plan. Ask for its written instructions when available. Requirements can vary by account and institution, so a general article cannot settle them for you. This guide does not explain how to reproduce bank identifiers, logos, or security features. Those are not part of the website’s sample tool.
Understand the broad paper options
Preprinted check stock already contains information supplied through an approved source, while blank check stock is sold for workflows that complete more of the document during printing. These are different starting points, and the one that fits your situation depends on your bank’s requirements and the software you use. Ordinary copy paper is useful for alignment trials and clearly marked samples; do not assume that it is acceptable for an actual check. Ask the bank or its approved supplier about appropriate stock rather than choosing solely by appearance or price.
Confirm the printer and app work together
Your printer needs to support the paper size, feed orientation, and connection method your workflow uses. If you plan to print from an iPhone, check compatibility with the relevant printing method and with your actual printer model. AirPrint is one planned feature of the CheckQuill iPhone app, which is still in development. It does not promise compatibility with every printer or stock format. Review the app’s released documentation when it becomes available, and avoid buying equipment based on a feature that has not yet shipped.
Test positioning with a clearly marked sample
Before feeding valuable stock into a printer, use a non-negotiable sample to understand orientation, margins, and scaling. Print settings such as “fit to page” can change the position of text, and different devices can handle margins differently. A plain-paper test is a way to inspect alignment, not a way to validate a payment document. Keep sample output separate from real checks so it does not create confusion. If the bank or approved supplier provides a specific test procedure, follow that procedure rather than improvising from a generic screenshot.
Review the ordinary fields carefully
Look for the correct recipient name, a readable date, matching numeric and written amounts, and a useful memo where appropriate. Confirm any signing requirements directly with your bank for the workflow you use. Do not copy another person’s signature or reproduce a bank’s branding. If information is clipped, tiny, or misaligned, resolve the layout issue before proceeding with an actual payment. Our local converter can help check the words for an amount, but it cannot check the recipient’s banking identity, inspect your balance, or approve the final document.
Protect the paper and the digital copies
Real check stock and completed checks contain information worth protecting. Store unused stock securely and retrieve printouts promptly, particularly if other people use the printer. A PDF can remain in Downloads, a cloud-synced folder, email attachments, or a print queue after you finish. Consider which copies you need and how you will retain or remove them. The CheckQuill browser sample never requests account details, and it does not upload the fields you type. Files you choose to download remain under your control on your own device.
Finish with records and realistic expectations
Record an issued check in your register and keep any relevant private documentation. Printing a check does not move money, ensure that a recipient can deposit it, or guarantee when funds will be available. If you are uncertain whether a workflow is supported, resolve that with your bank before issuing a payment. The free web tools are a useful first step for learning and reviewing non-sensitive fields. The planned iPhone app adds a broader preparation workflow; release details, pricing if any, and the official App Store link will be published when confirmed.
